Seals at Blakeney Point: A Must-See Wildlife Adventure

Dec 26, 2024

If you’re a nature lover, Blakeney Point in Norfolk is one of the best places in the UK to spot seals in their natural habitat. This stunning stretch of unspoiled coastline is home to a large colony of grey seals and common seals, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the beauty of wildlife up close.

A Sealing Adventure

Blakeney Point, part of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is a nature reserve accessible only by boat or a long walk along the coast. A seal-watching boat trip from Morston Quay or Blakeney Harbour is the perfect way to get a closer look at these magnificent creatures. The trips, which run from spring through autumn, will take you out to the sandbanks where the seals haul out to rest, often in large groups. It’s a truly magical experience to see the seals basking in the sun, or playfully splashing around in the water.

A Growing Seal Population

Blakeney Point is one of the largest grey seal colonies in England, and it’s easy to see why these seals have chosen this area as their home. The sandbanks and sheltered bays provide the perfect spot for them to rest, give birth, and raise their pups. If you visit between November and January, you might even be lucky enough to see adorable baby seal pups, with their fluffy white coats, dotting the sandbanks.

The seals here are incredibly curious and will often pop their heads above the water to take a look at the passing boats, giving you some great photo opportunities. While they’re generally quite relaxed, it’s important to keep a respectful distance and avoid disturbing them, so as not to stress the animals.

Why Blakeney Point?

Aside from the seals, Blakeney Point itself is an absolute beauty. The sweeping views, diverse birdlife, and remote atmosphere make it one of Norfolk’s most peaceful and picturesque spots. Whether you’re a keen photographer, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply someone looking to enjoy a quiet escape, Blakeney Point is the perfect place to reconnect with nature.
